Representative Williams, you are a member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. This committee troubles me. It feels like McCarthyism all over again with Elise Stefanek targeting university officials that do not lean toward her political camp. The resignation of Claudine Gay and Liz Magill appeared to be inappropriately forced by their testimony befor the House committee which had the makings of a kangaroo court. I firmly believe that there is enough wisdom, common sense and brain power on university campuses to use dissent as a learning opportunity, to self-police and to seek police action when absolutely needed. The actions of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce have interfered with the proper course of action and are counter to those who claim to be champions of limited federal meddling in local and state affairs. Representative Steffanek's bragging "two down..." is absolutely uncalled for. It betrays the dignity of her position; it diminishes my respect for her political party and colleagues; and it is counter to the high level of conduct expected from graduates of her beloved alma mater. Now the committee has set it's sights on Columbia University and it's president. I urge you to use your influence to be sure this House committee acts with caution before doing more damage.
