Students are not on the wrong side of history - do the right thing

To: Sen. Peters, Rep. Huizenga, Sen. Stabenow, Pres. Biden

From: A constituent in Kalamazoo, MI

May 5

The NYPD fired at least one firearm during the brutal attack and raid on the students at Columbia University peacefully protesting Israel's genocide this past Tuesday. All of the rhetoric about students being violent, or being overtaken by "outside agitators" is an ineffective tactic to draw attention away from the barbaric response this country is allowing to happen to our college students, just as it allows Israel's genocide to continue unimpeded. As of today, 5/2, the level of destruction Israel has reigned on Gaza will cost over $40 billion and require rebuilding efforts at a scale that hasn't been seen since WW2. And still, the bombardments continue daily, and Rafah is being attacked. The cost of the over 34,000+ Palestinians who've been murdered, however, is unquantifiable. It is unconscionable that you will continue to participate in this genocide at the expense of my tax dollars, that you're also using to brutalize college students across the country. You should be ashamed, but we both know you don't have any at this point. I am never surprised any more at the scale and breadth of the fascism, authoritarianism, and lack of humanity of this government but I insist on being outraged every single day. I demand that you:  – Hold Israel accountable for a permanent, immediate ceasefire, their violations of the Genocide Convention, and gross human rights violations by any means necessary – Call for the immediate end of Israel’s occupation and apartheid and support Palestinians in their fight for freedom and peace – Secure the immediate release and safety of all Palestinians who have been abducted and held captive by Israel, including those whose indefinite detention began prior to 10/7 – Permanently end all monetary, diplomatic, and military aid given to Israel and enforce Leahy Law – Reallocate all funds given to Israel and commit additional resources for ongoing humanitarian relief for Palestinians starting with immediately resuming funding of UNRWA – Immediately withdraw all U.S. troops, military assets, and all other assets deployed throughout the Middle East and cease all actions that further escalate a larger regional conflict – Pass legislation that voids all anti-BDS laws at the federal level -stop the attack on college students immediately and do NOT send additional funding to police. We have seen they are the ones doing the violence If you do not do this I WILL be voting for someone else in your next election. Not only that I WILL also help work for their campaigning and spread the words to others. Gen z and millennials can and will turn the tides of elections. Hear our voices and listen. The attacks on our students and the genocide must stop.
