Protect voting rights - Pass Freedom to Vote Act
To: Dir. Raffensperger
From: A constituent in Roswell, GA
November 14
The right to vote is a fundamental pillar of democracy, yet we continue to witness disturbing efforts to erect barriers and make it harder for eligible citizens to participate in elections. These voter suppression tactics, such as strict voter ID laws, cuts to early voting, aggressive voter roll purges, and the spread of disinformation about voter fraud, disproportionately disenfranchise racial minorities, low-income communities, and other marginalized groups. This undermines the integrity of our elections and the very foundation of our representative government. We urgently need comprehensive federal legislation like the Freedom to Vote Act to establish robust national standards protecting the right to vote. This law would safeguard early and mail voting options, ban voter roll purges that improperly remove eligible voters, and crack down on deceptive practices aimed at deterring citizens from casting ballots. It would also restore the full protections of the Voting Rights Act, which was gutted by the Supreme Court in 2013, leading to a resurgence of discriminatory voting restrictions in many states. Protecting the freedom to vote for all eligible Americans, regardless of race, age, or socioeconomic status, is essential to upholding our democratic ideals. I urge you to take decisive action by passing the Freedom to Vote Act and any other measures necessary to tear down the pernicious barriers impeding access to the ballot box. Our democracy depends on the full participation of all citizens.
