Reject bill threatening civil liberties under security pretext
To: Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley
From: A constituent in Tripoli, IA
December 3
This bill poses a grave threat to non-profit organizations as a whole by granting excessive powers to unilaterally designate them as "terrorist supporting organizations" without adequate due process. The intentionally vague language would also allow this to affect non-profits for creativity that certain persons simply dislike, violating free speech - not just humanitarian aid groups. No humanitarian aid organization should ever have the terrorist label applied without concrete, unbiased proof. Such provisions could easily be weaponized against marginalized communities and advocacy groups, stifling vital voices under the guise of counterterrorism efforts. The potential for abuse is unacceptable in a free society. I implore you to stand firm in defending constitutional rights and reject this deeply flawed legislation. Empowering the government to arbitrarily revoke tax-exempt status and freeze operations of lawful organizations is a severe overreach that undermines fundamental freedoms. We must remain vigilant against any measures that erode civil liberties under the pretext of security. Protect our democratic values by voting no on this bill.
