Stand up for constituents against harmful EOs
To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff
From: A verified voter in Rohnert Park, CA
February 5
I am your constituent and I am hurting and horrified by the political conditions in the country at present. Please do everything in your power to vocally support those affected and to challenge these decisions using your position. My concerns include, but are not limited to, the following: Transgender passport equality: I transitioned from female to male 9 years ago. I go through this world as a man. I had a passport as a child with a female gender marker. Under the current executive order, I cannot get a passport that says male (and would be aligned with my ID, appearance, and birth certificate). It would be unsafe for me to get a passport that says female, and it is materially harmful to not allow me to get a passport that says male. Deportation and immigration enforcement: Not respecting sanctuary spaces infringes upon religious freedoms and is unconstitutional. Increasing enforcement efforts is a cruel waste of money. Building a larger detention center is a cruel waste of money. Leaving the WHO: This is dangerous. Supporting world health initiatives is not only a moral imperative, but a national health and safety imperative. We need to be finding and addressing diseases and illnesses as they are first discovered in order to minimize the spread that affects us all. This is especially important in the light of H1N1. We need to restore WHO funding and participation as soon as possible Cutting science funding: The NSF funding freeze and changing requirements around DEI initiatives are harmful to our progress as a country. First, it will increase administrative costs and time spent analyzing all proposals for compliance with the order. Second, diversity and equity are important parts of scientific research and should be funded. For too long, scientific studies were done primarily analyzing a white male population, with an assumption that results would be universal. Increasing diversity and equity in scientific research ensures that the research results contribute to the health, safety, and growth of all segments of the population. Allowing Elon Musk access to private information: this is dangerous and a breach of privacy. Overall, the EOs of the new administration and implementation thereof waste taxpayer dollars playing political theater while making the lives of residents, including your constituents, worse. As your constituent, I want to know that you are doing everything you can to push back against these actions. This is why you hold this position. Please take it seriously.
