Protect Blind Federal Workers and Vital Disability Programs

To: Rep. Walberg, Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin

From: A constituent in Stevensville, MI

October 30

I am deeply concerned about the recent actions taken during the government shutdown that threaten the livelihoods of blind federal workers and the crucial programs they oversee. The attempt to eliminate around 4,000 workers from the federal payroll, including dedicated employees like Christine Faltz Grassman, is not only unjust but also undermines the very fabric of our diverse and inclusive society. The Randolph-Sheppard vending program, which has been providing opportunities for blind vendors since 1936, is at risk due to these layoffs. This program is a shining example of how we can empower individuals with disabilities to contribute meaningfully to our economy and society. By issuing 'reduction-in-force' (RIF) notices to blind federal employees who oversee such vital initiatives, we are not only jeopardizing their personal financial stability but also threatening the enforcement of laws that protect people with disabilities. Our nation's strength lies in its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Programs like Randolph-Sheppard demonstrate how, when given the opportunity, individuals from all backgrounds can thrive and contribute to our collective prosperity. The current administration's actions, which appear to be decimating civil rights employment infrastructure and programs designed to aid minority workers, students, and people with disabilities, go against these core American values. I urge you to take immediate action to protect blind federal workers and the critical disability programs they manage. Support the federal judge's injunction blocking these layoffs and push for a comprehensive review of the impact these cuts would have on disability rights and employment programs. We must ensure that our government continues to be a model employer, fostering an inclusive workforce that reflects the diversity of our nation. The consequences of inaction are severe. Without proper oversight, laws protecting people with disabilities may go unenforced, and programs like Randolph-Sheppard could falter, depriving blind Americans of valuable economic opportunities. We cannot allow short-term budget considerations to undermine decades of progress in disability rights and inclusion. I implore you to stand up for the rights of blind federal workers and all Americans with disabilities. Advocate for the continuation of these essential programs and the reinstatement of dedicated employees like Christine Faltz Grassman. By doing so, you will be upholding the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion that make our country truly great.
