Fight to protect Obamacare

To: Sen. Merkley, Sen. Wyden

From: A constituent in Beaverton, OR

November 10

Thank you for voting no on the recent concessions. I’m relieved and grateful you did not greenlight a deal that would have rewarded Republican brinkmanship and left the Affordable Care Act vulnerable. Your refusal to capitulate shows you understand what’s at stake for millions of Americans. I urge you to continue fighting to protect Obamacare and other essential programs. Now is not the time for retreat. Schumer’s willingness to offer weak concessions has revealed him to be spineless and unworthy of the leadership role he holds. His actions undermined our negotiating leverage and handed political cover to the very people voters just rejected. Please stand strong against the Trump agenda. Remember that Republicans remain historically unpopular right now — public sentiment and recent elections are on our side. We should use that advantage to defend health care, working families, and democratic norms instead of conceding ground to demands that harm constituents. If our leaders won’t use their authority to push for real protections, they should not hold the power to set our strategy. Schumer must be held accountable and removed from leadership if he continues to put political expediency ahead of principle. Thank you for representing our values — I hope you will keep up the fight.
