It’s time for New York to take reckless driving seriously. I am writing to urge you to support Senator Gounardes’ and Assemblymember Gallagher’s bill to slow down the worst repeat speeders in New York City. In New York, speeding is a factor in almost one-third of all fatal crashes.
When New Yorkers drink and drive, we use built-in breathalyzer technology to prevent them from doing it again. We can also use Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology to prevent dangerous speeding.
In 2021, there were over a dozen drivers who accumulated 100 speeding tickets near our schools, and several hundred who have over 50. While these repeat offenders are an overall small number of drivers, they are disproportionately responsible for carnage on our streets.
This bill does not deny anyone mobility, it simply ensures that those with extensive track records of driving dangerously change their behavior to be in line with the vast majority of other drivers.
ISA technology was piloted on NYC Fleets and reduced emergency braking by 36%, and trucks followed the speed limit 99% of the time.
Not speeding is one of the most basic expectations we should have in our shared public space.
With your support, we can ensure that New Yorkers safety is prioritized over reckless drivers.
