Reject partisan Patel nomination, protect FBI independence

Kash Patel's nomination as FBI Director poses a grave threat to the integrity and independence of our justice system. As a self-proclaimed partisan warrior, Patel has vowed to weaponize the FBI against his political adversaries, including journalists and civil society organizations. His explicit intention to punish those who challenged Trump's "Big Lie" about the 2020 election undermines the foundational principles of equal justice and non-partisan law enforcement. Confirming Patel would irreparably tarnish the FBI's credibility and mission. Even during the Trump administration, Patel's potential ascension to a senior FBI role was blocked by Attorney General Bill Barr, who recognized the severe risks posed by empowering such an overt political operative. If Barr, whose personal loyalty to Trump is well-documented, viewed Patel as too extreme and unfit for the FBI, it underscores the present danger. The Bureau requires steady, independent leadership committed to following the facts and upholding the rule of law without prejudice. Installing Patel would transform the FBI into a retaliatory instrument to advance the ambitions of a single faction. Patel's confirmation threatens to institutionalize the very abuses of power and democracy subversion that have gravely eroded public faith in government. Safeguarding functional democratic institutions is a collective responsibility that transcends partisan allegiances. Senators concerned about preserving justice, accountability and constitutional order must adamantly oppose this reckless nomination.
