The proposed "Parents Bill of Rights" legislation in Ohio raises significant concerns about infringement on students' privacy rights and enabling discrimination against LGBTQ+ youth. This bill would require schools to disclose students' mental health information and sexual orientation to parents without the child's consent. Forcing this disclosure could jeopardize the safety and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ students who may face rejection or abuse at home. Furthermore, the bill undermines educators' professional judgment by allowing parents to obstruct age-appropriate instruction on reproductive health and LGBTQ+ issues. This would deprive students of comprehensive, medically accurate education vital for their development. Such legislation perpetuates harmful stigma and marginalizes an already vulnerable population of youth. I urge you to veto HB 8 to protect students' fundamental rights to privacy, access to information, and an inclusive learning environment free from discrimination. All children deserve to feel safe, accepted, and supported in their schools.
