Uphold separation of church and state, protect religious freedom

To: Sen. Moran, Rep. Mann, Sen. Marshall

From: A constituent in Lawrence, KS

February 7

As a Christian, I am deeply concerned that the president's announcement to create a task force investigating alleged "anti-Christian bias" in the federal government raises serious issues regarding the separation of church and state. This foundational principle, enshrined in the First Amendment, ensures the government remains neutral on matters of religion and does not promote or favor any particular faith. By singling out Christianity for special protection, the administration risks violating this constitutional tenet. Moreover, characterizing opposition or criticism as "anti-Christian bias" could suppress dissent and stifle free speech. A pluralistic society thrives on the exchange of ideas and the ability to question prevailing norms, including those of a religious nature. While free exercise of religion is a cherished right, it does not grant adherents immunity from criticism or exemption from laws applied equally. The stated goal of "defending the rights of Christians" risks prioritizing one group's beliefs over others, undermining religious freedom's essence. Instead of pursuing divisive church-state blurring measures, the administration should uphold the First Amendment's guarantees of free exercise and non-establishment for all religions and beliefs.
