Halt Deportation Agreement Violating Human Rights

To: Sen. Hawley, Pres. Trump, Rep. Bell, Sen. Schmitt

From: A constituent in Maryland Heights, MO

February 5

The unprecedented agreement between the US and El Salvador to house violent criminals and deportees from any nationality raises serious concerns. Deporting individuals to another country's prison system, particularly one with documented human rights violations and inhumane conditions, is a violation of international law and human rights norms. This agreement would effectively treat human beings as commodities to be exchanged, disregarding their dignity and due process rights. The proposal to potentially deport even US citizens to Salvadoran prisons is unconstitutional and a flagrant breach of their citizenship rights. Moreover, sending asylum seekers to a third country they have no connection to contravenes refugee protections and the principle of non-refoulement. I urge you to reconsider this misguided policy and uphold the United States' commitment to human rights and the rule of law. Pursuing mass deportations without due process and subjecting individuals to appalling prison conditions is unacceptable and tarnishes America's global standing. There are more humane and lawful approaches to addressing immigration and security concerns that do not trample on fundamental rights and norms. I implore you to reject this agreement and instead prioritize just, rights-respecting immigration reforms.
