I am writing to express my profound opposition to HB 1136. Using legislation to threaten the dissolution of a school corporation and the duly elected officials on its board disenfranchises the more than 22,000 students and their families in IPS and does not serve the best interests of our children or their teachers. This legislation diverts the attention and efforts of educational staff away from their work to promote student success and staff development and toward the defense of the corporation’s ability to exist and retain the elected officials on their school board. It is not a collaborative effort to meet children’s educational needs and invites chaos and uncertainty. I want to advocate for IPS’s continued success and stability in the Indianapolis community. Preserving local decision-making and avoiding disruptions to students and families is of the utmost importance in building strong communities.
