I urge you to vote no to the Laken Riley act. This legislation appears to be a common sense fix to keep undocumented criminals off the streets, but in fact it’s a horrifying overreach that raises serious constitutional concerns. It would penalize legal immigrants in the US, subjecting them to indefinite detention without being convicted or even charged with a crime. And it would transfer a massive amount of power to state attorneys general and district court judges, who could effectively wrest control over immigration enforcement from the executive branch. The act curtails legal immigration and subjects law abiding people to unfair detention and deportation. It’s cruel and constitutionally dubious, and I urge you to fight it and to vote no.
