An Open Letter
To: Sen. Johnson, Rep. Pocan, Sen. Baldwin
From: A constituent in Madison, WI
November 7
I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent, mental health provider, Jewish American, and as a parent. The recent election results have left me, like many others, with profound fears for the future of our country—especially regarding the rights of women, BIPOC individuals, LGBTQIA+ communities, people with disabilities, and Jewish Americans. With small children at home, I am particularly worried about the kind of world they will inherit. I want to ensure that they grow up in a country that values equality, safety, and justice for all. Under the previous Trump administration, we saw repeated attacks on essential protections that help safeguard marginalized groups. The regression of rights—such as reproductive healthcare for women, anti-discrimination protections for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals, accessibility rights for people with disabilities, and action against anti-Semitism—has left many Americans feeling vulnerable and powerless. I fear that, with Trump once again in power, these rights and protections may continue to erode, undoing decades of hard-fought progress and undermining the inclusive and just society that I want for my children. Women’s rights, particularly regarding reproductive health, face renewed threats under this administration, potentially restricting access to safe and legal abortions, contraceptives, and broader healthcare services. These policies not only jeopardize women’s rights but also weaken our society’s commitment to bodily autonomy and personal freedom—values I want my children to grow up understanding and respecting. Equally concerning is the treatment of BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disabled, and Jewish communities. Many of the policies previously championed by Trump’s administration fueled divisive rhetoric and weakened protections for these communities, even emboldening hate groups that openly target them. As incidents of anti-Semitism continue to rise across the country, it is more important than ever that our leaders take a firm stand against hatred and intolerance. Jewish Americans, along with other communities, deserve to live without fear of persecution, violence, or discrimination. I urge you to take a strong stand in protecting the rights and freedoms of all Americans. As my elected representative, I am asking you to actively support and prioritize legislation that safeguards women’s rights, advances racial equity, upholds the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals, combats anti-Semitism, and ensures equal access and protections for people with disabilities. Now more than ever, we need leaders who are unwavering in their commitment to justice, equality, and human dignity. Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I hope I can count on you to take meaningful action to ensure that the future of our country reflects the values of inclusivity, fairness, and respect—values that are essential for my children’s future and the future of our nation.
