Order the Archivist to Certify and Publish the Equal Rights Amendment
To: Pres. Biden
From: A verified voter in Arlington, VA
December 29, 2024
I am writing because I am very concerned about the future of America, especially the rights of women over the next 4 years. I have a pregnant sister-in-law who is expecting a girl, not to mention a 5-year-old neice. My state has not yet passed any new restrictions on women's health care, but neither has it passed any protections. If federal laws were to be enacted, it would greatly increase the risk of my sister-in-law's pregnancy. The Equal Rights Amendment is a golden opportunity to protect American women from laws that would restrict our reproductive healthcare. Without it, the upcoming extreme conservative leadership is free to do as it pleases with regards to women's rights because we have no explicit federal p rotections. You claim to support women's rights, yet you are supporting the unprecedented action of the Archivist in refusing to execute her basic administrative duty to publish the ERA. The courts can weigh in after publication, but it is not in the Archivist's discretion to decide whether or not to publish. You claim to support women's rights- prove it. Order the Archivist to do her job and certify and publish the fully ratified 28th Amendment. Until then, all your statements of support are hollow. Would you believe a president supported Civil Rights if he let the Civil Rights Act sit unsigned on his desk? I certainly would not, and so I cannot believe you support women's rights until you order the ERA to be published.
