Close Guantanamo, respect civil liberties for immigration cases

The recent decision to transfer migrants to the Guantanamo Bay detention facility raises grave concerns about civil liberties and human rights. Guantanamo has long been a stain on America's commitment to due process and the rule of law. Rather than expanding this extraterritorial prison, the ethical solution is to close Guantanamo once and for all, and process immigration cases through the established judicial system on U.S. soil with full constitutional protections. Arbitrarily detaining migrants without fair trials or access to legal counsel is a violation of fundamental American values and international norms. I urge you to reverse course on this misguided policy, shutter the Guantanamo facility, and handle immigration matters transparently in accordance with civil liberties. The injustices of Guantanamo must not be compounded by using it as an immigrant detention center.
