The SAVE Act is an unnecessary and dangerous piece of legislation that seeks to make voting more difficult, particularly for voters of color and naturalized citizens. Existing laws and verification processes already effectively prevent non-citizens from unlawfully registering or voting in federal elections. This bill perpetuates the false narrative of widespread voter fraud by non-citizens, which has been used as a pretext to enact discriminatory voting restrictions targeting communities of color. Requiring documentary proof of citizenship imposes an undue burden on the voter registration process and would disproportionately disenfranchise eligible voters from immigrant communities, communities of color, and language minority groups. These are the very communities that have historically faced significant barriers to political participation. Rather than erecting additional obstacles, Congress should be working to promote democratic participation and protect the freedom to vote for all eligible citizens. This legislation is a divisive attempt to intimidate immigrant communities from exercising their lawful voting rights. It undermines our democratic values and principles. Instead of advancing measures rooted in fear and discrimination, Congress should focus its efforts on proactive reforms that strengthen voter protections, increase access to the ballot, and foster a more inclusive electoral process. The SAVE Act must be firmly opposed in favor of policies that safeguard the fundamental right to vote for all Americans.
