Stop the Nonprofit Killer Bill

To: Sen. Cardin, Sen. Van Hollen

From: A verified voter in Greenbelt, MD

December 10

The "Nonprofit-Killer Bill" (HR 9495/S. 4136) poses a grave threat to civil society by granting the executive branch unchecked power to declare any nonprofit a "terrorist-supporting organization" without due process, potentially leading to asset seizures and the dismantling of vital organizations. This bill's implications are chilling, enabling authoritarian overreach reminiscent of tactics used by oppressive regimes to silence dissent and quash fundamental rights. We must vehemently oppose this legislation, which undermines constitutional protections and jeopardizes the essential work of countless nonprofits serving communities across the nation. The supposed safeguards are woefully inadequate, offering no meaningful avenue for organizations to defend themselves against spurious designations that could prove financially and operationally devastating. This alarming measure represents an assault on the nonprofit sector's independence and a step toward emboldening the government to arbitrarily shut down any group or cause deemed unfavorable. Such unilateral authority is antithetical to a free society and must be unequivocally rejected to uphold the democratic principles upon which this nation was founded. Urgent action is imperative to prevent the further erosion of vital civic spaces and the disenfranchisement of vulnerable populations.
