An Open Letter

To: Rep. Kiggans

From: A verified voter in Smithfield, VA

January 11

I urge you to oppose HR 22, the proposed legislation requiring proof of United States citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. While the intent may be to ensure electoral integrity, this measure would create significant barriers for millions of eligible voters. Nearly 10% of American citizens lack the requisite documentation like passports or birth certificates, which can be costly and difficult to obtain. Erecting such hurdles risks disenfranchising a substantial portion of the electorate and undermining participation in our democracy. I hope you will stand against HR 22 and any measure that impedes the ability of legal citizens to exercise their fundamental right to vote.
