Washington State should follow Illinois' lead in implementing comprehensive prior authorization reform for health insurance plans. The new Illinois law prohibits prior authorization requirements for inpatient psychiatric admissions, mandates transparency by requiring payers to publish all services subject to prior authorization, and bans step therapy protocols under utilization review programs. These reforms help ensure timely access to necessary care and reduce administrative burdens that impede quality healthcare. Furthermore, Illinois has banned the sale of short-term "junk" health plans that provide inadequate coverage. Such plans leave consumers vulnerable to costly medical bills and compromise access to affordable, comprehensive health coverage options. Washington would benefit from enacting similar consumer protections. Reforming prior authorization protocols, enhancing transparency around utilization management practices, and eliminating substandard health plans align with prioritizing patient needs over profits. These measures prevent exploitation by payers and uphold ethical principles of equitable healthcare access. Washington should implement comparable reforms to rein in harmful insurance industry practices and safeguard residents' ability to obtain necessary medical services without onerous barriers. Proactive legislative action can drive positive change in our healthcare system.
