I urge you to vote NO in HB28–the sports ban on trans athletes. Banning a tiny number of the most vulnerable people in society in a blanket statement is cruel, it should never be done, and the right place for people to figure out fair approaches to trans athletes in sports is with the local groups on the ground anyway. A third grader playing soccer on any recreational league isn’t hurting anyone. But the real issue for me as a parent of a daughter is how this ban would be enforced—will we be doing genital checks on my elementary schooler? That would be creepy and invasive for any age! My kid will never play professional sports, but she deserves to be part of a team and to feel safe from that kind of nonsense!! And the same is true as she gets older. Not to mention, as I said, there’s like 10 trans people in the country TOTAL in this category who are any issue at all with competitive fairness, and those districts are already dealing with that situation on the ground fairly. Why would we spend valuable resources debating this bill nationally when it has so many downsides and so so few people are affected? We should be focusing on the price of eggs, and the collusion of rental companies making housing unaffordable! Stop allowing people to spend time on this absurd nonsense, and instead work on making everyday people’s lives better. Vote no, and spend time on literally anything else. Trans athletes are so few, and far, far better handled by local bodies anyway.
