The proposed abolition of the Department of Education by Republican lawmakers poses a severe risk to crucial educational programs and the over $1 trillion federal student loan system. While the stated goal is to return control to states and localities, dismantling the department would imperil initiatives like funding for students with disabilities, early childhood education, Pell Grants, work-study programs, and the entire federal student loan portfolio including forgiveness and repayment programs. Disrupting the operations of this long-standing federal agency through staffing cuts, lack of institutional knowledge, and diminished oversight could lead to processing delays, errors, and mismanagement detrimental to millions of students, families, and borrowers who rely on these programs. Given the tremendous scale and importance of the department's responsibilities, maintaining its role in overseeing and administering key national education and aid initiatives is vital to ensuring equitable access and support across all communities. A measured approach prioritizing stable funding and staffing would better serve the public interest.
