The decision to pass legislation requiring schools to inform parents about changes to their child's healthcare or curriculum involving sexuality and gender identity is deeply concerning. This law appears to be driven by fear and misinformation rather than facts and a genuine desire to support students. Forcing schools to reveal private healthcare discussions between students and trusted staff could out LGBTQ+ youth to their families before they are ready, potentially putting them at risk of harm. It also undermines the safe spaces schools strive to create for all students. Mandatory parental notification about lessons involving sexuality or gender identity disregards the important role educators play in providing inclusive, age-appropriate education on these topics. This legislation wastes valuable time, resources, and taxpayer money that could be better spent actually improving educational outcomes and student well-being. Rather than fueling division, we should be working together to create schools that are welcoming and supportive environments where every child can thrive. I urge our representatives to reconsider this misguided law and its negative impacts on LGBTQ+ students, families, and the entire school community.
