An Open Letter
To: Pres. Biden
From: A verified voter in Baltimore, MD
December 23, 2024
I am writing to respectfully join the voices of Representative Raúl Grijalva, Senator Brian Schatz, and 34 other lawmakers in urging you to grant clemency to Leonard Peltier.
Mr. Peltier, a Native American activist and member of the American Indian Movement, has been imprisoned for nearly five decades under circumstances that raise grave concerns about the fairness of his trial and conviction. As noted by human rights organizations, legal experts, and even individuals once involved in his prosecution, his continued imprisonment serves neither justice nor public safety.
At 79 years old and in deteriorating health, Mr. Peltier poses no threat to society. His release would not only be a profound act of compassion but also a step toward healing long-standing wounds in the relationship between the U.S. government and Native American communities.
I urge you to honor your administration’s commitment to justice, equity, and reconciliation by granting clemency to Leonard Peltier.
