Reject inhumane migrant detention plan at Guantanamo Bay

To: Sen. Husted, Rep. Taylor, Sen. Moreno

From: A constituent in Portsmouth, OH

February 6

The Trump administration's proposal to detain thousands of migrants at the Guantanamo Bay naval base is an alarming overreach that raises grave constitutional and human rights concerns. Holding asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants in a remote military prison, without due process or access to legal representation, would be an egregious violation of their fundamental rights and a stain on America's reputation. This draconian plan evokes the darkest chapters of Guantanamo's history when it was used to detain terror suspects indefinitely without trial, subjecting them to interrogation tactics widely denounced as torture. Subjecting vulnerable migrant populations, including families and children, to such inhumane treatment is unconscionable and antithetical to American values. Moreover, the proposal appears to be unconstitutional, as it would deprive detainees of their right to habeas corpus and circumvent established legal procedures for processing asylum claims and immigration cases. Such a sweeping expansion of executive power to detain civilians without judicial oversight sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the rule of law. I urge you to vocally oppose this misguided policy and take immediate action to ensure it is never implemented. America's moral standing and commitment to human rights are at stake. We must reject policies that compromise our principles and treat migrants with the dignity and due process they deserve.
