Co-Sponsor H.R. 2590 & Stand Against Injustice

I write to you as an advocate of human rights. From Sheikh Jarrah, Lifta, Beita, Silwan, Batn El Hawa, Gaza and all around the world, humanity is rising up against Israel's continued ethnic cleansing and apartheid in historic Palestine. As Israel violently attacks Palestinians for resisting the oppression they have faced for 73 years, the cruelty of its settler colonial regime is on full display for the world to see. The time to take action is now. The path to peace can be achieved when diligently and authentically pursued. If the U.S. truly wants to work as a fair partner for peace, Congress must act to ensure mechanisms of support for Palestinians. I implore you to voice your support and co-sponsor Congresswoman Betty McCollum’s (DFL-Minn.) legislation Defending the Human Rights of Palestinian Children and Families Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act H.R. 2590, which prohibits Israel from using U.S. taxpayer dollars in the Occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem in violation of international humanitarian law. U.S. assistance intended for Israel’s security should foster peace and must never be used to violate the human rights of children, demolish the homes of Palestinian families, or to permanently annex Palestinian lands. By resolution 52/149, the UN General Assembly proclaimed June 26th the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, with a view to the total eradication of torture and the effective functioning of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. Amnesty International has found that occupation forces “continued to torture and otherwise ill-treat Palestinian detainees, including children, with impunity.” Methods of torture commonly used by Israeli military forces include: beating, painful shackling, sleep deprivation, use of stress positions, threats of violence against family members, denial of medical aid and prolonged solitary confinement as a punishment. June 26th is an opportunity to call on all humans to unite in support of the hundreds of thousands of people around the world who have been victims of torture and those who are still tortured today. It is with recognition of these facts that I, as your constituent, implore you once more to stand firm in your opposition to injustice, speak up in support for human rights, help bring ethical values to the forefront of American politics and foreign policy, and support H.R. 2590.
