The idea that pregnancy is an appropriate consequence of sexual activity seems to be a prevalent attitude among the forced birth movement. It's also inherently sexist.
Sexual desire is a natural, human drive. Sexual activity between consenting individuals is one of the most intimate and fulfilling acts those who experience sexual desire can know. Couples who engage in sexual relations tend to be happier and more invested in each other. In short, sex is not something bad, or something that should only be tied to reproduction.
The argument that women who choose to have sex are also choosing to be pregnant ignores the fact it is 2022. We have the science and the medicine to have agency over our reproductive cycles. To not accept and embrace this is dehumanizing and adding unnecessary constraints to an already challenging existence.
For this, and many other reasons, I am writing a letter a day until we end forced birth by writing reproductive freedom into law.
