Forcing someone to have a child when they are not ready to do so is an act of harm.
It harms the person unwillingly pregnant by disrupting their life and putting an unsought strain on them for the rest of their lives. It harms that person's support network, which now must also alter focus and spend energy where it had not been intended. And it harms the child, who gets born into a situation that at best is hastily prepared with minimal resources.
Forcing people to have children before they're ready perpetuates cycles of poverty, abuse, and trauma. For this and many other reasons, I am writing a letter a day until we end forced birth by writing equitable abortion access into law.
