No one challenges women's life choices like American doctors and politicians.
If a man wants to get snipped, no questions asked. No need for the wife's permission. No concern for future wives. No long speeches and refusing treatment because "well it could be permanent and you're so young."
A woman looking to get her tubes tied must work hard to prove her worthiness. Her husband must agree. She must be a certain age. She must have already had children. No husband? Does the boyfriend approve? What about the boyfriend or husband you haven't met yet? Oh, you're a lesbian. What if that changes?
This illogical inability to allow women to control their own lives, this gross insistence on framing everything a woman does around even a hypothetical man, is one of the many reasons I'm writing a letter a day to end forced birth. Reproductive freedom must be written into law.
