Many forced birth laws simply ignore the fact that women in this nation face sexual assault, including rape, at an unforgivable rate. These laws are written in isolation, without regard to societal context, and quite often never address the fact that being impregnated by a rapist is a very real danger.
Other forced birth laws acknowledge that no woman should ever have to carry the child of a rapist. Ironically, this weakens the defense of forced birth; if abortion is "sometimes okay" even to a religious extremist, why are we not allowing the individual involved to decide that for themselves?
The fact that no one should need government permission to NOT carry their rapist's child is one of many reasons I'm writing a letter a day to end forced birth.
