Co-Sponsor S1991/A4331 to End Qualified Immunity in NY

I am emailing you as a concerned constituent urging you to support and co-sponsor Senate Bill S1991/Assembly Bill A4331 to end qualified immunity in New York. Qualified immunity protects law enforcement officers from civil liability even when they are found to have violated a person's constitutional rights. The legal doctrine not only shields law enforcement from accountability but also deprives victims of police brutality of getting justice. The communities you are tasked with representing—particularly your Black, Brown, and Indigenous constituents—are disproportionately affected by qualified immunity. By not sponsoring this bill, you indicate to your constituents that you condone the protection of public officials who have committed constitutional violations. Instead, we ask you to support a law that will ensure that no one is above the law. I ask that you support and cosponsor this bill, which will protect the rights and safety of your constituents and foster accountability in policing for the betterment of the community you serve.
