A key tenent of any human rights code is the right to control what happens to our own bodies. It's a crime in every nation for others to do or cause things to our bodies without consent.
Bringing a child into this world is a beautiful, wonderful thing...when that path has been actively chosen by an informed individual. Being forced into the experience turns a miracle into a nightmare. The complications of pregnancy are legion, and leave one's body permanently changed. They can also leave lasting harm or even kill. I am unclear how forcing someone to give birth differs from torturing them.
Forced birth robs individuals of their human right of bodily autonomy. For this and many other reasons I am writing a letter a day to end forced birth and protect access to reproductive care with law.
