Rerouting hospital data
I am deeply troubled by the recent news that hospital data from COVID-19 will be rerouted from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's National Healthcare Safety Network to the new Department of Health and Human services platform run by TeleTracking. The CDC has been striving to provide guidance and leadership to our nation during this pandemic and has consistently by stymied by officials in federal leadership. This directive from HHS came without context. The rationale provided by Asst. Secretary Caputo and others is not sufficient to rationalize a change in data collection in the midst of this crisis. This directive came without sufficient time for hospitals to implement it effectively. Asking hospitals flooded with patients to completely pivot their reporting mechanism in 48 hours is deeply disrespectful to our healthcare professionals and compromises the quality of the data they will submit. The public has also not received confirmation that 100% of information reported to the TeleTracking system will be transparently available to concerned citizens. Perhaps most troubling, your agency has threatened to withhold remdesivir from hospitals that do not transition to the new system. This puts American lives in additional danger, which is unacceptable. In order to continue making informed recommendations and creating wise guidance, it is imperative that the CDC has immediate access to hospital data in a format that matches the data they are currently processing. I have five specific demands. 1) HHS must Inform hospitals to immediately return to reporting their COVID-19 data through the NHSN system 2) HHS must immediately share 100% of hospital reporting data collected through the TeleTracking system with the CDC 3) HHS must not redact, edit, or modify any data that is shared with the CDC 4) HHS must make all data obtained by HHS or the CDC in either the NHSN or the TeleTracking system free and transparent for public access 5) The federal government must make remdesivir available to any hospitals that demonstrate need in the NHSN Please confirm your responses to these demands. Thank you for your urgent attention to this matter,
