An open letter to the U.S. Congress Title IX Threats & Changes
7 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers! Congress Today I was extremely disheartened to read of Ms. DeVoss threat to remove federal state funding if transgender students are allowed to compete with their gender. This is an appalling threat of power that subverts the landmark protections of Title IX. The changes made to Title IX in regards to reporting sexual assault are also dangerous and beyond disappointing to me. Removing coaches as mandated reporters and increasing rights of those accused only turns back the clock on progress forward in abolishing sexual assault and making it safe for victims to come forward.
As a social worker and having served on faculty at a major university, I made Title IX reports when students disclosed abuse to me. Students need to be able to rely on faculty and university leadership to provide protection and oversight for their wellbeing.
Please exert your influence by denouncing these changes and working to insure that protections are in place for all people to report sexual assault AND to denounce the Secretary of Education from making threats against women athletes.
She is furthering trauma during this already traumatic time in our nation.
