Yesterday, House Resolution “51” passed in the United States House of Representatives, paving the way forward for the Senate to vote on Washington, Douglass Commonwealth to become the 51st state. It is anticipated that the Republican-led Senate will vote this down and it is my belief that this staunch opposition on the part of Republicans is based in racial discrimination and white supremacy. In 2018, the United States Census estimated that 45.5% of Washington, DC’s population was black or African American, while 42.2% was white. At over 700,000 residents, Washington, DC has a population larger than both the states of Vermont and Wyoming, yet this population is not represented by two senators in the United States Senate, like Vermont and Wyoming are, and it has only one representative in the House who is not even permitted to vote. In 2018, residents of DC paid $28 billion in federal taxes, which amounts to more than taxes paid by residents in 21 recognized states. It is clear to me that the Senate Republicans are only interested in suppressing the rights of this majority-Black city and it is, quite basically, unconscionable. Please consider taking the right and fair course of action and vote to make Washington, Douglass Commonwealth America’s 51st state. Thank you.
