An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Extend PSP Funding to Protect Airline Employee Jobs

8 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

As an Employee of Southwest Airlines, I know firsthand how devastating the COVID-19 pandemic has been on the airline business. I also know how beneficial the CARES Act’s Payroll Support Program (PSP) has been in protecting tens-of-thousands of jobs throughout the U.S. airline industry. I am very grateful for the CARES Act and its protections for airline employees. However, PSP funding and the protections afforded to airline workers are set to expire on October 1. PSP has proven to be tremendously successful in preventing involuntary furloughs, cuts in employee pay rates, and cuts in benefits throughout the airline industry in the second and third quarters of 2020. PSP has certainly assisted Southwest to avoid such draconian measures this calendar year. But we do not know what the future holds. Without a six-month renewal of PSP, Southwest’s 49-year tradition of never engaging in involuntary furloughs or reducing employee pay or benefits is in jeopardy. Moreover, the airline industry is an essential component of the nation’s supply chain and will be a critical piece to the nation’s future economic recovery once the pandemic recedes. We cannot let the airlines shrink indefinitely as our economy relies on airlines to transport people and goods safely, efficiently, and economically. As your constituent, I respectfully ask that you do everything possible to enact another COVID-19 economic relief bill. Please be certain that a clean, six-month renewal of PSP is included in any legislation that Congress may adopt this fall. Thank you in advance for your consideration of my views in this extremely important matter.
