An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Food shortages are coming — please pass the PRIME Act!

7 so far! Let’s get to 10 signers!

Severe food shortages are coming within weeks, according to numerous experts. I urge you to pass the PRIME Act or similar legislation to allow ranchers and farmers to sell directly to the public, preventing these shortages and tragic waste of food. The cause is that meat may only be butchered and sold from USDA-approved facilities, but these facilities are closing and massively reducing capacity because of COVID-19 and labor shortages. As a result, millions of animals are already being slaughtered and burned or buried instead of brought to market. This will quickly result in huge shortages of meat in grocery stores within weeks, endangering the dietary health of many millions of vulnerable Americans. Please take immediate, urgent action to address this through the PRIME Act or similar legislation. You can read more about this dangerous threat in Rep. Thomas Massie’s tweet thread here: ‪ I further urge you to support ending the shutdown in California, where millions are facing severe effects of poverty due to the shutdown order, and many farms are at risk of closing permanently. Thank you for reading this far.
