Qualified immunity was arguably one of the worst decisions that the modern US government has ever made. It was produced in resistance to the Civil Rights Movement and is still used to oppress BIPOC voices and support police brutality today. As someone elected to voice both Montanan and American values and opinions in the halls of one of the world's most influential buildings, it is your DUTY to not only sponsor the Ending Qualified Immunity Act, but to spread awareness for it and ensure that it becomes important enough to pass as legislation. Acts like this need your actual support, not just silently voting in favor of them.
Seeing someone from a community like mine, who could have lived much more comfortably by not taking interest in these issues, stepping up and defending minorities is one of the most amazing things I have had the privilege of witnessing. But many people of color here in our wonderful state need to know, especially now, that there are people with power who respect them. Silence is not an option, especially when your silence on this act will protect the power of those who don't have respect for BIPOC citizens.
