On Friday, May 1st, thousands of essential workers will walk off their jobs or call-in sick because their bosses refuse to provide them with basic protections during this pandemic. I urge you to take a stand and fight for workers during this unprecedented global crisis. Recently enacted protections for the public and workers are insufficient. Hard working Americans continue to die, lose their loved ones, lose their jobs, and lose their life’s savings and homes as politicians and CEOs prioritize money over our human lives. The U.S. government has deemed workers at Amazon, Instacart, Whole Foods, Walmart, Target, Fedex, and other public-facing corporations as “essential.” Yet, these corporations refuse to provide fair compensation, practice CDC social distancing guidelines, or provide quality healthcare to these workers that reflect this “essential” designation. Instead, our legislators have allowed people like Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to increase his wealth by almost $24 billion from this crisis, and our legislators have increased military spending by billions. For example, the cost of a single F-35 war plane, estimated at $144 million, is enough to purchase approximately 2,800 ventilators —a painful reminder of how our government chooses death over life. On May 1st, workers demand: compensation for all unpaid time off used since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis in March; hazard pay or paid sick leave to be provided for the duration of the pandemic; protective equipment and all cleaning supplies to be provided at all times by the company; and a demand for full corporate transparency on the number of cases in facilities. As you look toward the election in November, I urge you to side with workers. You must force corporations to meet these demands through bold policy interventions that impose strict penalties commensurate with our current crisis. Inaction is a choice and a policy position—who you support this time will be your legacy.
