An open letter to the U.S. Congress

Please fight the EARN IT Act!

20 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers!

I implore you to stop the Graham-Blumenthal Anti-Secutity Bill. This bill would allow the attorney general to unilaterally decide on how online platforms and services must operate or face hefty fines. We know that companies will fold from this to avoid the fees, and that will open back doors into screening speech and reading private communications. The EARN IT Act is a wolf in sheep's clothing. By definition it undermines Section 230, which is so crucial online privacy that it would come up simply from forwarding an email. This new Act is a direct threat to constitutional protections for free speech. Its wording is so incredibly broad that it would essentially allow the Commission to change the law as they see fit, as long as they can somehow claim that it was for the service of preventing child exploitation. I understand that fighting child exploitation is a just cause. Truly, I do. But not at the expense of national user privacy. This would open the floodgates and pave the way to a surveillance state even more than we already are. Please do not allow this bill to pass.
