An open letter to the U.S. House of Representatives

Stop Police Unions and H.R. 1154

16 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers!

While black people around the United States have known for years, the police are an institution whose main resource is brutal violence that is far from the United States where any of us truly wish to live. This country has been witness to the depths and depravity of the violence that the police will use against ordinary citizens since the death of George Floyd, including protestors, the members of the press, or any persons who may be simply alive and on the street after city curfews take effect and, mostly, people of color. The country is screaming with all its might for a raised standard of accountability of police, and policies which seek to limit the brutal measures at their disposal. One of the major institutional bodies which, consistently and nationwide, stand in the way of progress towards peace and justice are police unions. These unions stand directly in the way of accountability for police officers who have used unacceptable brutality in the performance of their perceived duty, and accountability is necessary for any change. I urge you to speak against the bill, H.R.1154, which would have the effect of decreasing accountability within police unions. Police Unions have been cited repeatedly, notably recently by Campaign Zero, and by Black Lives Matter Chicago in 2017 for allowing police brutality to increase and I believe that can no longer be tolerated. Of course, other public safety workers deserve the protection and prosperity a union can provide, but those needs must be made separate from police unions.
