Vote No to The Lawful Access to Encrypted Data Act

715 so far! Let’s get to 1,000 signers!

The Lawful Access to Encrypted Data Act is a new bill introduced in the senate that aims to force developers to provide back doors to encrypted information. Encryption is a key technology that keeps citizens and businesses safe by protecting their sensitive data, like bank info, patent data, and sensitive personal information, from falling into the wrong hands. There is no such thing as a back door for just the “good guys.” This would open up American’s private data to be compromised by malicious hackers, hostile foreign governments, and even overzealous government agencies. This would do nothing to stop terrorists, criminals, and other unlawful actors from using encryption to protect themselves since encryption methods are available freely on the internet as open-source software, leaving only law abiding citizens exposed and weakened. This is the same argument 2nd Amendment supporters use. If we outlaw guns then only outlaws will have guns, and if we outlaw encryption than only outlaws will have encryption. I ask you to vote “No” to this extremely short sighted and damaging bill. If this passes than it will do only harm and no good will come of it.
