An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures

PLEASE READ: A Call to Action from a Young Black Constituent

44 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers!

I am a 16 year old black female who, like most others in the black community, is horrified and angered by the unjust murder of George Floyd by the hands of Derek Chauvin and his accomplice ex-coworkers. You might think this is a problem for Minnesota, but police brutality and racial violence is a problem plaguing every state in this country. North Carolina has had their own share of police killings, as Keith Lamar Scott and Danquirs Franklin were both shot and killed, with their murderers receiving little to no real punishment. I demand to you, as you are privileged white men with real political power, to urge radical change regarding police violence within the black community. We want equality, we want all killer cops to be justly punished for their crimes, we want adequate police de-escalation training, and most of all, we want to urge to you that black lives matter. They matter today, tomorrow, and forever. Our movement is not a trend conspired to demean cops. We just want our voices to be heard, and we know you have the power to change things in our state. We urge you, please do not be on the wrong side of history. Black lives matter. Black Lives Matter. And one more time for the General Assembly: Black. Lives. Matter.
