An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures

Implement Police Reform and Reopen COVID-19 Testing

56 so far! Let’s get to 100 signers!

This unrest did not start with the death of George Floyd and will not stop with the arrest of his killer(s). It has become painfully clear over the past 48 hours that systemic racism is deeply ingrained in law enforcement now more than ever. What started as peaceful protests against police brutality across both the county and state were escalated by the hand of our OWN law enforcement. Police authorized and encouraged violence that was UNPROVOKED against the communities they swore to protect and serve -- a violence that was the reason for these demonstrations in the first place. It is unacceptable that the national guard and a highly weaponized police force were enacted over night when hospitals are still struggling to access PPE gear and COVID testing is still not widespread due to "demand". It is even more unacceptable that Mayor Garcetti closed COVID testing stations during a global pandemic, seemingly in response to unsubstantiated claims that LA citizens were attacking police. Today, I am ashamed to be a Californian. I ask you to implement reviews and reforms of LAPD immediately, to re-open and prioritize COVID-19 testing, to divest funding from police enforcement and put the added budget towards healthcare, education, and low-income housing, and finally, I ask that you LISTEN to us -- your constituents. We have evidence, we are offering solutions, and right now we have less and less to lose.
