As your constituent, I urge you to reject the EARN IT Act (S. 3398).
The Graham-Blumenthal bill would give the Attorney General far too much power to dictate how Internet companies must operate. Attorney General William Barr has made it clear that he would use that authority to undermine our right to private and secure communications by weakening encryption.
EARN IT would create an unelected commission of government officials, that could ban encryption and regulate online speech. This unaccountable new commission could also require Internet platforms to censor users in order to comply with the political agenda of current, or future, governments.
Regulating sensitive areas is a balance that should be struck only by Congress through an open, transparent lawmaking process. Not a commission run by the executive branch.
Please publicly oppose the EARN IT Act.
