While I empathize with the desire to return to face-to-face instruction in our schools, I am concerned that this desire to return to 'normal' is causing our leaders to lose sight of the serious safety concerns associated with the full reopening of schools in the midst of a pandemic.
I urge you to use your leadership position and influence to shift the conversation about school reopening away from threats to school funding and towards how we can support schools' efforts to educate children in the safest manner possible, whether that is through face-to-face instruction, virtual instruction, or a combination of the two.
Educators have a long history of overcoming incredible challenges in the classroom. With the support from all levels of leadership, our country's educators will be able to rise to this challenge and safely educate our nation's children. Please allow educators to act in the best interest of the health, safety, and well-being of students and their families - even if that means a different-looking school day.
Thank you for your consideration and public service.
