An open letter to State Governors & Legislatures UPDATED: Immediate reinstatement of Habeas corpus in NYC
16 so far! Let’s get to 25 signers! *I am writing you again to redact my support for 8cantwait, the 8 demands currently requested by the NAACP. This would end up giving the NYPD more money (which is already being misused) and increasing the number of police needed to enforce these rules. The officers of the NYPD do not follow the rules already in place. Instead, consider steps such as specialized mental health professionals trained to respond to homeless or otherwise handicapped individuals experiencing a mental health episode.
The suspension of Habeas Corpus in New York City is absolutely criminal, corrupt, and unacceptable. No one can attempt to justify that behavior under any circumstances. We have video evidence of the NYPD brutally attacking constituents - the very people who put your colleges in office in return for them to offer us protection. Frankly, the prioritization of their so-called “peace” over justice and the right to protest are absurd, dehumanizing, and unjust. I call for the immediate reinstatement of Habeas Corpus. As well as legitimate redirecting of funds away from the NYPD and into other programs that directly benefit the Black Community.
I insist that you stand with the people of New York in writing to all elected official of New York City and flexing your political power that you were voted into.
Suspending Habeas Corpus is not an act of safety. It is a threat to our freedom, collective mourning, and collective anger at the systemic racism that the NYPD has continuously upheld since its founding. While I currently only call for the reinstatement of Habeas Corpus, please know I will be writing you on many more occasions to demand change to many more malpractices that you have contributed to in perpetuity for many years and are continuing to escalate.
