As you go into tomorrow's vote, I implore you, vote to repeal 50-A. It is intolerable and inexcusable that law enforcement is allowed to conceal and withhold disciplinary records. Now more than ever, it is obvious that the public supports transparency and accountability in our law enforcement. We cannot allow officers who have records of brutality, abuse, negligence, and misconduct to walk our streets and answer our calls as if nothing ever happened. If there is no accountability, bad actors will act badly again and again. If there is no transparency, none of us will able to trust any of them. Organizations like the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association want to say these demands are anti-police. The only thing this measure will oppose is the privilege of police to stand above and apart from the public, the privilege to hide their mistakes, the privilege to uphold the lie that police misconduct is none of the public's concern. It is all of our concern. It is an enormous concern. It is literally a matter of life and death. This is the absolute least you can do right now. Amidst calls to defund and/or dismantle police departments across the country, the very least we can do is stand up and demand accountability and transparency. We must stand up and demand honesty. Please, vote to repeal 50-A. It is the least you can do.
