An open letter to the U.S. Congress Close the loophole for legalized police sexual assault, pass H.R.1574
35 so far! Let’s get to 50 signers! I am writing to implore you to immediately revisit and pass H.R. 1754, the Closing the Law Enforcement Consent Loophole Act of 2019. The fact federal law enforcement officers can legally engage in a sexual act with an individual who is under arrest, in detention, or in their custody, is absolutely reprehensible. This is a VILE abuse of power, this is sexual assault, this is rape.
The fact so many officers have gotten away with this, legally using CONSENT as their defense, is just yet ANOTHER example of how fucked up our criminal justice system is, and how our elected officials have failed us. Consent can NEVER be given by a person in custody, under coercion.
YOU have a responsibility to protect your constituents. This is especially critical during these times of protest, with so many people getting arrested. The spotlight is on police brutality, and the spotlight on YOU to do everything in power to protect us from the police and reform the system entirely.
This bill has been rotting in Congress since April, 2019. There is no excuse for this. This is the LEAST you could do to start to make change. We are watching, please do the right thing.
With anger and hope,
